For those who didn’t know; yes, there is a highway being built between India and Thailand. Running from northeast India to Mae Scot in Thailand, this 3200-km highway would make it possible for people to drive from India to Thailand via Myanmar.
What started in 2012 as one of the more ambitious projects by governments of three nations is nearing completion now. The Myawaddy-Thinggan Nyenaung-Kawkareik section of the Asia Highway, that links India and Thailand, is now operational.
What It Means?
The highway, known as the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway (IMT), will be connecting Moreh to Mae Sot in Thailand, passing Yangoon in Myanmar. PM Narendra Modi has taken it up the project on priority basis and it is expected to be completed by 2016. It would not only be an alternate tourist route but is believed to give a good boost to trade as well.
